The Panthers have officially announced the signing of former Tampa Bay defensive tackle, and 6 time pro bowler, Gerald McCoy (30), in what could prove to be a massive signing for the team this season. McCoy has signed a one year deal worth around $8.5 million that should just about complete the overhaul on defensive side of the ball.
McCoy is coming off what I guess you can consider a “down year” by his standards as his tackle numbers took a significant drop but he still registered six sacks for a very poor Bucs team in which he was just about the only defensive threat. McCoy’s ability to rush the passer should transition wonderfully to Carolina as the Panthers have looked to revamp their defense this offseason.
The secret is pretty well known by now that Carolina is more than likely transitioning to a 3-4 hybrid defense judging by their acquisitions during both free agency and the draft. We can probably now speculate that the idea is to have McCoy and Kawaan Short as your 3-4 defensive ends with Dontari Poe manning the nose tackle position. Your EDGE rushers will be Brian Burns, Mario Addison, Christian Miller and Bruce Irvin. Compared to who they were fielding last season this is gigantic upgrade.
Personally, I would have rather seen us use our funds to upgrade the free safety position which is still a huge question mark in my opinion, but one cannot be upset when you bring in a player of Gerald McCoy’s caliber. Hopefully his leadership and skillset revitalize the Panthers pass rush and can lead them into a successful season.
